Vathiraruppu is situated 18 kms north west of Srivilliputhur and 72 kms southwest of Madurai and is connected by bus routes from Srivilliputhur and Madurai. To the north of it stands Western Ghats. The principal feature of the portion of the mountain, which is about 4000 feet high, is that this village is in the deep part of the fossil valley and Arjuna River flows by the side of the village. It is in this village, Nallanthangal drowned herself with her seven children in a well. It is the subject matter of south Indian ballads. The well and the temple erected in the spot known as Nallathangal Temple can still be seen.
